Another guide in the series of “Designing Your Kitchen” put together by Jon Axon, the head honcho at Jurassic Kitchens & Living Spaces.
Choosing the best kitchen work surface depends on a few factors, such as budget, aesthetics, durability, maintenance, and how often you cook.
Here are some popular options I’d consider along with their pros and cons:
1. Granite
Pros:
Very durable and resistant to scratches and heat.
Unique, natural patterns and colours.
Adds value to your home.
Cons:
Can be expensive.
Requires periodic sealing to prevent staining.
Can be heavy, so requires proper support.
2. Quartz
Pros:
Extremely durable and nonporous, so it doesn’t need sealing.
Available in a wide range of colours and patterns.
Low maintenance.
Cons:
Can be pricey, though not as much as granite.
Can be scratched by sharp objects, though it’s resistant to staining and heat.
3. Marble
Pros:
Elegant and timeless appearance.
Good for baking because it stays cool.
Cons:
More prone to scratches and stains compared to granite and quartz.
Requires regular sealing.
Expensive.
4. Wood (Butcher Block)
Pros:
Warm, natural look that adds character to a kitchen.
Can be sanded and refinished to remove scratches.
Good for chopping and cutting directly on the surface.
Cons:
Requires regular oiling to prevent drying out.
Can be scratched and dented, especially around knives.
Susceptible to water damage if not properly sealed.
5. Laminate
Pros:
Affordable.
Available in a wide variety of colours, patterns, and textures.
Easy to clean and maintain.
Cons:
Not as durable as other options; can scratch and chip easily.
Heat can damage it, so you’ll need to use trivets or mats for hot pots.
Doesn’t add as much value to a home as stone or wood options.
6. Concrete
Pros:
Customizable in terms of shape, colour, and texture.
Very durable when sealed properly.
Cons:
Needs to be sealed regularly to avoid staining and water absorption.
Prone to cracking, especially if not installed properly.
Can be heavy and may require extra support.
7. Stainless Steel
Pros:
Professional, sleek, and modern look.
Highly durable, heat resistant, and resistant to stains and bacteria.
Easy to clean and maintain.
Cons:
Can scratch easily, especially with heavy use.
Shows fingerprints and smudges.
Can be noisy when using pots and pans.
8. Soapstone
Pros:
Extremely durable and nonporous.
Resistant to heat and stains.
Beautiful, subtle appearance that gets better with age.
Cons:
Can be expensive.
Needs to be oiled periodically to maintain its look.
9. Recycled Materials (Glass, Paper, or Resin)
Pros:
Environmentally friendly, made from recycled materials.
Unique appearance with many options for customization.
Cons:
Can be prone to scratching and staining.
Durability can vary depending on the material used.
Key Considerations When Choosing:
Budget: If you’re on a tight budget, laminate or butcher block could be the best choices. For higher budgets, granite, quartz, or marble may be more appropriate.
Style: Choose a material that complements the style of your kitchen (modern, rustic, classic, etc.).
Durability: If you cook a lot or have a busy kitchen, consider something like quartz, granite, or stainless steel for maximum durability.
Maintenance: Some materials (like wood and marble) require more maintenance, while quartz and stainless steel are low maintenance.
Heat and Scratch Resistance: Materials like granite and quartz are more resistant to heat and scratches, while wood and laminate may suffer more damage from hot pots or sharp knives.
It all depends on your personal preferences and what you prioritize – whether it’s beauty, durability, ease of maintenance, or budget.
